The combination of gold leaf and ancient wetland oak makes the Pen of the Year 2012 an extraordinarily luxurious fountain pen. The 18 Carat bi-color gold nib is available in line widths M, F and B, each one ‘run in’ by hand. The end cap protects the twist knob for the filling mechanism. All metal fittings are 24-carat gold-plated. The masterpiece is crowned by a chessboard faceted citrine gemstone set in the cap. This is a limited edition to 1500 pieces worldwide.
Mecca is a city in the Hejaz and the capital of Makkah province in Saudi Arabia. The city receives more than 13 million Muslim Pilgrims annually during Hajj period held in the twelfth Muslim lunar month of Dhu al-Hijjah. As the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad, Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in the religion of Islam. The Visconti Mecca fountain pen is turned from a black shiny resin bar in a form which immediately recalls the architecture of the Kaaba. For ergonomic reasons we have rounded the corners of this bar in order to make the Mecca pen become a daily writing instrument. The four shaft sides and the three ones of the cap are “decorated” with Qur’an verses in Arabic. These writings are inspired to the Kiswa, the precious black cloth that cover the Kaaba with its golden writings. When the cloth is lifted up we can see the original structure of the Kaaba, made of bricks and this is exactly the same for the pen rings. The clip of the pen come with a balancing device, a common feature to many Visconti pens of the past inspired to the silver set Kaaba Black Stone recalling the human eye. The Mecca pen numbering system is inspired to number 622, the year of Hijra.
